    National Honor Society

    To become a member of NHS, a student must demonstrate scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Each member must be able to demonstrate these qualities both in and out of school.

    A student must be in 10th-12th grade. and students must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.1 to be considered for membership.

    Members are selected by the faculty board and inducted into the National Honor Society in the spring of each year.

    A major component of NHS is community service. Many groups from around the area contact the National Honor Society to ask for volunteers, such as the American Red Cross local blood drive.

    Student Council

    Student Council consists of two representatives from every class 6 through 12.

    They organize various homecoming activities like lunch time games and the annual poster competition.

    The School Play

    Advisor- Mrs. Becky Valot

    The play cast consists of actors and actresses from grades 5 through 12.

    The 2017 play will be performed in April.

    Previous plays have included "Chaos in Fairytale Forest" and "The Mysterious Case of Sherlock Holmes."

    Quiz Bowl

    Quiz Bowl is an annual competition that participating students from 9 through 12 grade participate in.

    The competition takes place against competing schools at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

    The students choosen to compete consist of four competitors and two alternates.

    Science Olympiad

    Science Olympiad is an annual competition that participating students from 9 through 12 participate in.

    The competition is against competing area schools at the Alpena Community College campus in Alpena, Michigan.

    Students prepare all throughout the school year for the variety of activities until the competition date in March.

    Activities involved include Rube Goldberg, Forensics, Insects, and many more.

    High School Band

    The high school band consists of students from grades 9 through 12.

    Throughout the year these students perform in three concerts and a variety of pep bands during girls' and boys' home basketball games.

    Selected students also participate in solo/ensemble and the area's honors band.

    Band students attend a band trip every other year and have in the past several years gone to Nashville, Cleveland, and Chicago.

    The Straits Area Youth Advisory Council(SAYAC)

    The Straits Area Youth Advisory Council is a group of students in grades 9 through 12 who work together to decide where grant money should go for surrounding organizations for students.

    Participants are from several school districts including Cheboygan, Wolverine, Inland Lakes, and Mackinaw City.

    It is a great opportunity for students to meet other peers and work together towards a common goal.
